Why Education Makes the Difference When You Start a Business

Dan Hodges

When people start a New Business, they often make a hopeful assumption: hire an accountant, and the money side will take care of itself. I understand the instinct. You're busy building something, and handing off the numbers feels like one less thing to worry about.

But I've watched this play out for years, and I want to be honest with you. Hiring an accounting firm will not teach you how to run your business or necessarily give you the insight on structures or alternatives. That's not a knock on accountants — it's just not really what the job is.

What Accountants Actually Do

Conventionally, accountants do two things: accounting and taxes. We record what already happened, and we report it to the government. That's valuable work. A good accountant keeps you compliant, catches errors, and files things correctly and on time.

But notice the tense. Accounting is mostly about the past. By the time a decision hits your books, the decision is already made. If you set up your business the wrong way, chose the wrong structure, or missed a strategy months ago, your accountant can only report the result — not undo it.

So when a new owner hands over a shoebox of receipts and hopes strategy will magically appear, there's a gap. The accountant is doing exactly their job. It's just not the job the owner actually needed.

An Accounting Firm Is Not a University

Here's the core idea I want you to remember: an accounting firm is not a university.

A firm processes your work. A university teaches you why the work matters and how to think about it. Those are completely different products. You can pay a firm every month for years and still not understand your own numbers, your own tax position, or your own options.

That's dangerous, because the decisions that save you the most money may happen before the accounting starts. How you structure your company. How you pay yourself. What you track. When you buy equipment. Whether an expense is really deductible. These are choices only you can make — and you can only make them well if you understand them.

Education is what closes that gap. When you know the basics, your accountant becomes a partner instead of a mystery box you pay.

The Setup Stage Is Where It Starts

Think about the very beginning. Setup is where owners often have the most questions and the least guidance.

Should you operate as a sole proprietor, or form an LLC or Corporation? What does it mean to make your business Official with your state? What records do you need from day one? What's the difference between being registered and being organized?

An accountant can file the paperwork. But if you don't understand what an LLC or Corporation is, the choices you have and the strategy that makes it optimized you'll keep making blind decisions after setup, too. The paperwork is the easy part. The understanding is the part that pays off for years!

Rules absolutely can vary by state and moreover by your situation, so always check current guidance and talk to a professional before you file. But you should at least understand the choices you're making — not just sign where someone points.

Why We Founded My Favorite CPA

This is exactly why we started My Favorite CPA. Not to replace your accountant, but to give owners the education that traditional firms were never built to provide.

We want you to understand your business, not just outsource it. We want you to walk into any conversation — with a lender, a partner, or a CPA — knowing the options and what certain things mean. We want you to spot opportunities and avoid mistakes because you learned how things actually can work to your favor.

Education is the difference between an owner who reacts and an owner who plans. Between someone who fears tax season and someone who prepared for it all year. Between guessing and knowing.

Strategy Beats Recordkeeping

Contrasting backward and forward arrows showing strategy beating recordkeeping in education makes the difference

Recordkeeping tells you where you've been. Strategy decides where you're going. Both matter, but only one of them changes your future — and it's the one most new owners never get taught.

You don't need to become an accountant. You need to understand enough to make good decisions and ask good questions. That's a realistic goal, and it's the goal we're built around. And it will make you a far better client and user of accounting services.

So hire the right accountant. Just don't expect them to be your personal teacher. Invest in your own education, and every dollar you spend on professional help will work much harder for you.

Frequently asked

If I hire a great accountant, do I still need to learn this stuff?
Yes. A great accountant keeps you compliant and files things correctly, but they can only report on decisions you've already made. Understanding the basics helps you make better decisions and ask sharper questions, so their work benefits you more.
What's the difference between forming an LLC and making my business official?
Forming an LLC is one way to organize your business as a legal entity, while 'making it official' can involve registering with your state, getting needed licenses, and setting up proper records. Requirements vary by state and situation, so check current guidance and consult a professional before filing.
Is My Favorite CPA a replacement for my accountant?
No. We focus on education so you understand your business and your options. That complements a good accountant — it doesn't replace the accounting and tax work they do for you.
